  1. A retainer fee is a fixed amount of money that a client agrees to pay, in advance, to secure the services of a consultant or freelancer. The fee is typically not associated with the success of a project or based on achieving particular results. A retainer is often paid in a single, lump sum, or on an ongoing basis (typically monthly or quarterly).
  2. Retainer fee in general means to pre-pay someone (or at least a portion) for service to be rendered.
  3. A retainer fee arrangement is used to pre-book a consultant for a certain number of hours per month regardless of the project or need (within the given scope of course).
  4. A retainer is a fee arrangement that usually involves a set number of hours monthly and are not project specific. In most instances the retainer is a contractual agreement.
  5. Some retainers can also be a flat fee with no hours of work attached. For example, web developers sometimes charge a retainer fee plus their time. So, there it's a straight fee and you still pay them essentially an hourly wage for the work they perform.
