Website maintenance PDF Print E-mail

Website maintenance refers to on-going changes to a site once it is published on the Internet. As your organisation changes, your website must be updated to reflect the changes.

There is nothing more harmful to your credibility than having out-of-date information on the Internet for all the world to see.

Maintenance must be planned for in the early stages of your project. Your organisation would typically appoint someone to be responsible for checking the site regularly, and arranging for updates to be done as necessary.

Decisions must be made about who will manage site content and how. The right option for you will depend on what needs to change and how often. If website maintenance is to be provided by your web designer, an hourly rate or a retainer fee (recurring monthly fee) should be discussed and agreed on.

What is the difference between hourly rate and a
retainer fee?

Hourly Rates vary based on the

  1. experience of the Web Developer and
  2. demand for that Web Developer.
Our hourly Rate is R320.

Retainer fees vary depending on the following
  1. experience of the web developer
  2. size of the website being maintained
  3. the number of hours in that particular retainer package.
  4. services covered by that retainer package i.e. some retainer packages are for modifying text only, others include modifying images while others include creating newsletters too.

We currently have one Standard Retainer package costing R3 000 which consists of

  • 10 hours per month for modification of text/copy and website images excluding flash animations. The development of flash animations is charged at an hourly rate of R325, and is billed separately.

Content Management
This is theĀ  process of updating the content (text/copy and pictures) on a website. There are several options available for this, ranging from paying someone (either an hourly rate or a retainer fee), to doing it yourself using a fully-developed and secure Content Management system.

These Content management systems can be expensive to implement, and most have limitations on what you can change. Changes to page layout or navigation still need to be done by a web designer. The right option for you will depend on what needs to change and how often.

This should be decided near the beginning of the project, as it impacts how your site is designed and built.
